What is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine is a form of tissue engineering and molecular biology that deals with replacing, engineering, or regenerating human cells, tissues, or organs to restore or establish normal function. Treatments often include stem cell therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and processes that use growth factors.
When injured or invaded by disease, our bodies have the innate response to heal and defend. Harnessing and enhancing the body’s own regenerative powers is a medical practice at the frontier of present-day advancements. These regenerative properties may seem miraculous to those who benefit from them. However, the miracle is the result of scientific exploration that has begun to unlock and utilize the body’s extraordinary ability to heal and restore itself.
How Does Regenerative Medicine Work?
Cells are the building blocks of tissue, and tissues are the basic unit of function in the body. Generally, groups of cells make and secrete their own support structures, called an extracellular matrix. This matrix, or scaffold, does more than just support the cells — it also acts as a relay station for various signaling molecules. Thus, cells receive messages from many sources that become available from the local environment.
Each signal can start a chain of responses that determine what happens to the cell. Through medical technology, we can now understand how individual cells respond to signals, interact with their environment, and organize themselves into a healing process. Scaffolds are created utilizing various regenerative medicine treatments allowing for the tissue to self-assemble.
Benefits of Regenerative Medicine
Regenerative medicine is used to treat the root cause of pain. It’s been used for a variety of diseases and conditions — from knee pain to a myriad of arthritic conditions. And, while the main benefit of using regenerative medicine is to reduce pain, it’s not the only one. Other common benefits include:
- Increasing functionality
- Quicker healing
- Reduced risk of future injuries and pain

Providing Relief to Everyday People
“I’ve had bad knees for years. I reached a point where I had to crawl up the stairs. Today, I’m walking up the stairs… I used to feel like I was walking on stilts, and now I’m not. I haven’t felt this good in about eight years!”
“My feet were so bad [that] I didn’t know where they were when I was stepping — causing me to have a balancing problem… Within a week… my feet had feeling in them [again]… My legs — which had started to get numb — had started regenerating the feeling within the legs themselves.”
“I have osteoarthritis on my hands… After the first session, by the time I got home, my thumb was able to move around without pain. And, the next day, when I woke up, I was so surprised to find out that my joints in my other fingers were also moving so much more. In fact, I felt like I must have had WD-40 on all my joints… It’s great!”
“My right knee was hurting, and I found it difficult to walk… I just had my last injection, [and] for the last two — really three — months I’ve been walking just fine. I don’t even think about it when I’m walking. I’m just very pleased.”
